California Personal Injury Attorneys Serving The Irvine Community
The area that eventually became Irvine was used for ranching and farming by the Irvine family in the 1800s and the first half of the 1900s. The family sold two parcels to the United States government for two marine bases in the WWII era, and then in 1959 the family sold 1,000 acres to the University of California for a new campus.
Irvine is a planned city, primarily developed by the Irvine Company since the 1960s. The master plan called for industrial, residential and recreational areas, as well as commercial centers and green belts. Initially built around the campus of UC Irvine, the 66-square-mile city has grown considerably since its inception, now boasting a population of over 223,000 residents. Its outstanding public schools, plentiful jobs, safe, attractive neighborhoods, and Mediterranean climate have made Irvine a desirable community to live and work in. Business Week in 2011 listed Irvine as the fifth best place to live in the United States. The FBI in 2010 reported that Irvine had the lowest violent crime rate among cities in the country with a population greater than 100,000.
Reflecting this vibrancy, Irvine is the home of numerous corporate headquarters, particularly in the technology and semi-conductor industries. Some of the larger employers in the city are Broadcom (semi-conductors and electronics), Edwards Lifesciences (medical equipment), Verizon Wireless (telecommunications), Western Digital (computer hard drives), and Allergan (pharmaceuticals). Mercedes-Benz USA selected Irvine for its second Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, which opened in 2006.
A number of colleges are located in Irvine, including UC Irvine, Concordia University, Irvine Valley College, and satellite campuses of California State Fullerton and Pepperdine University. UC Irvine is the city’s largest employer with over 16,000 employees.
