California Bus Crash Kills 13
On Sunday, near Palm Springs California, a tour bus returning from a casino slammed into a tractor-trailer killing 13 people and injuring 31 others, according to state police. Among those killed in the accident was the bus driver, and other injuries ranged from minor to moderate. The bus was going so fast that when it hit the big rig, the trailer ended up about 15 feet into the front end of the bus. The bus was operated by USA Holiday and was returning to Los Angeles from The Red Earth Casino, according to CHP Division Chief Jim Abele.
Bus Was Inspected Recently
Reports indicate that the bus had been inspected in 2014, 2015, and in April of 2016, with no mechanical problems reported. Chief Abele said there was no fog at the time of the crash, and that traffic (including the trailer) had slowed because a maintenance crew had been stringing wires across the roadway. CHP did shut down all lanes of the highway for first responders to care for the injured. Police said the injured were taken to three hospitals, including Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
