Common Birth Injuries

Some birth injuries can be resolved during a short hospital stay. Others involve medical conditions that may pose life-long health problems. Medical providers are trained to recognize the risk factors and warning signs for harm during labor and delivery. But when those signs aren’t noticed quickly enough, serious damage can occur, including the conditions listed below.

Brachial Plexus Injuries (BPI)

This type of injury involves damage to the bundle of nerves coming from the upper spine that goes through the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand. Approximately 10% of cases result in a permanent disability. Types of BPI range from mildest to most severe. Neuropraxia: the mildest form of BPI, is caused by stretching of the nerves. Neuroma involves a torn nerve which does not properly heal. Rupture involves torn nerves that still remain attached to the spine. In avulsion, the most severe type of BPI, the roots of the nerves are completely separated from the spine, which causes complete paralysis. One type of BPI is Erb’s Palsy. Between one and two of every 1,000 babies have the condition, typically caused when a baby’s neck is stretched to its side during a difficult delivery. The condition results in loss of movement and feeling in one of his or her arms. Usually the infant recovers from the condition in time with proper treatment.

Bone Fractures

Another common result of a difficult delivery is broken bones, collar bones being one of the more common ones to break. Immobilization and time heal most newborn bone fractures without any lingering effects.

Caput Succedaneum

Caput Succedaneum is most often caused by excessive pressure during the delivery process, which causes the scalp of the newborn to be bruised, swollen and discolored. The condition heals on it s own most of the time and poses no serious long-term threats.

Perinatal Asphyxia

Perinatal Asphyxia occurs as a result of insufficient oxygen, usually due to inadequate blood flow to the fetus or newborn or an oxygen deficiency in the blood itself, causing seizures, coma, breathing difficulties, pale complexion and shock. The condition could cause permanent neurologic damage.

Intracranial Hemorrhage/Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

This injury includes bleeding in the skull, commonly under the two innermost layers of the brain covering (subarachnoid hemorrhage).

Facial Paralysis

Facial paralysis is caused when the facial nerve is damaged during delivery, which usually is only a temporary condition. The condition causes poor facial muscle control, most noticeable when the infant cries.

Spinal Cord Injuries

These injuries are typically results after nerve and cord damage or meningeal tears caused by the use of forceps during delivery, which can cause neurological problems and/or paralysis.

Cerebral Palsy

A majority of cerebral palsy cases are a result of brain injury or complication in brain development in utero or during labor and delivery. It is one of the more common types of birth defects, affecting between two to three of every 1,000 children. The condition is characterized by poor motor skill development, weak muscles and muscle spasms. At present, there is no known cure for cerebral palsy.
